Description
The Bichet One Room School is located 4.5 miles northeast of Florence, Kansas on the western edge of the Flint Hills. Built in 1896 for French families who settled along the Cottonwood River. The first term 1896-97 included 19 children from 8 families. The school closed in April of 1946 with only two students enrolled. The building was built from native stone by local stone mason, Oscar Johnson. One of the outstanding features remaining at this school are the two stone outhouses, one on the north, the other on the south. There is also a stone storm cave to provide protection from deadly storms....
