Description
This photo was taken near Geary, Oklahoma in 2012. The dark red color of the moon was caused by smoke obliterating the light of the moon. Occasional thinning of the smoke allowed the moon to be seen. In times of drought, Oklahoma is especially susceptible to wildfires because of the prevalence of red cedar trees. Most of the canyons and prairies are literally covered with the trees most consider a pestilence. This particular fire started in a densely forested canyon which was very difficult to access. The firefighters from several towns fought this fire throught out the night and part of the next day as it ran wild through the countryside, jumping firebreaks, highways and county roads. Fortunately, this area has few homes that were in danger but at one time, a small town was threatened. Valiant efforts by many dedicated firefighters eventually saved the town.
