Description
This is the famed "Pony Bridge" near Bridgeport,Oklahoma on the original Route 66. Built in 1933 over the furious South Canadian River, it is just shy of 4,000 feet long and has 38 yellow trusses from end to end. It has carried an untold number of cars, trucks and farm equipment since that day and still is a major route for traffic going north and east. The bridge is one of the most recognized landmarks of Route 66 and was featured in The Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda. Today, the bridge has some repair problems though it still holds up massive oilfield traffic and is the only means of crossing the river for farm equipment. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has it's destruction and replacement in their long range bridge upgrade plans but a storm is brewing as lovers of historical elements want nothing less than restoration of this mighty structure....

Thank you Kate. This is my favorite bridge in Oklahoma. Cali has some that are a bit bigger and you are a pro at shooting them. I always enjoy your bridge photos.

This bridge has a place in my heart as we grew up on the farm that connects on the west. I can remember many times when the water would almost go over the highway and once when Dad left his tractor in the bottom, a fllod happened and all you could see was the top of the exhaust pipe. We were river rats all through childhood. Funny thing is, I never learned to swim. Scared of water... LOL...
