Correct me if I'm wrong but the Hughes Ranch must be SW of Bartlesville on the highway toward Woolaroc... Correct ? If so, I have shot the horses there several times... The above image is south of Foraker ( west of the Tallgrass Prairie)... Thank you Karen ! :)

I just recently visited the Hughes Ranch area near Bartlesville to see the mustangs. I love the vantage point of this photo! Nice!

Thanks Donna ! They are pretty well taken care of and have many, many acres to graze on. They are rescued horses from the desert so are definitely better off.

Artist's Description

This is one of a multitude of wild horse herds that wander the thousands of acres in the Tallgrass Prairie in Osage County, Oklahoma. Placed here by the Bureau of Land Management in a lease program with landowners, it is a land of plentiful grass and water which can support the herds. Brought here from the western U.S. because of the lack of food and water in that area, it is a new and better life for the animals.

About Jim McCain

My personal connection with art started as a child living on a farm along historic Route 66 and the Canadian River. My mother had art talent as well, but like me, she never had any training. It wasn't until after her death that we discovered some drawings of hers from middle school. So I owe her for my interest in many forms of art. Living on the farm adjacent to the Canadian gave her the chance to teach us all about nature and the wonders to be found in the woodlands and streams. I grew to appreciate and care for all living things and that ultimately led me to photography. My first camera was an old Kodak box camera using 620 film. Our first family trip farther than Oklahoma City was to Montana when I was about 14 years old. I shot...
