Description
The Clements Double Arch Stone Bridge is located on the Cottonwood River near the ghost town of Clements, Kansas in Chase County. It was built in 1886 using native limestone from local quarries. The cost of the bridge in 1886 was a whopping $12,000. Actually, in those days that was a lot of money. If one walks underneath the bridge, one will see that, considering the type of machinery available in those days, the bridge is indeed a marvel of engineering. Proof of that lies in it's condition and age ( 128 years ). It was deemed unsafe for modern traffic and slated for destruction after a new bridge was built upstream but a movement was set in place to save the old bridge and in 1976 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
