Description
The Pony Bridge as it is known in Route 66 lore crosses the once treacherous South Canadian River near Bridgeport, Oklahoma. It was built by the State of Oklahoma in 1933 and effectively replaced a toll bridge upriver at Bridgeport which was on the original route of 66. The Pony Bridge is 3,944 feet long and has 38 of the pony trusses. An interesting fact about the bridge is that it was pictured in the 1939 film, "The Grapes of Wrath." It was, in fact, a principle route for those leaving the Dust Bowl area enroute to California and the west.
