Description
This beautiful plant is known as bear grass. It was used by the Blackfoot Indians for medicinal purposes as a poultice for wounds, etc. The fibrous leaves were also used for the weaving of baskets and even capes or hats. When the leaves were dried, they took dyes easily and when woven tightly were waterproof. I can find no reference that bears actually eat the tuberous roots of the plant but had heard that story when in Glacier.
